Over 400 Cooperatives Registered On GeM Portal In Last 3 Months: Govt
Government e Marketplace (GeM), is a digital platform for public goods procurement to build an open, efficient, and transparent procurement platform and elevate Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises. GeM is a modern, self-sufficient, and user-friendly website that allows government officials, organizations, and public sector units (PSUs) to buy common goods and services online.
It provides
extra services like e-bidding, reverses e-auction, and demand aggregation
technologies to help government users get the most bang for their buck. It is a
completely digital, cashless, system-driven marketplace that allows users to
purchase ordinary goods and services with little to no human involvement.
In the previous
three months, approximately 400 cooperative societies have registered on the
Government e-Marketplace (GeM) platform.
Aside from that,
the government has made several steps to strengthen and expand cooperatives
since the establishment of a new cooperation ministry in July 2021.
Organic
products, particularly those from the North East, do not have a market.
Cooperatives can sell organic or other products through the GeM portal today.
According to the
National Portal of India, the GeM POC platform now offers over 7,400 products
in around 150 different categories, as well as the opportunity to engage a
transportation service. More than Rs 140 crore in transactions have already
been completed through the portal.
A national
committee, led by former union minister Suresh Prabhu, has been formed to
design a new cooperation policy, and the consultation process is currently
underway.
The 'Government
eMarketplace' procured Rs 1 lakh crore in annual procurement in FY22. The increase
is 160% more than the prior fiscal year.
Several
initiatives have been made to incorporate products from self-help groups
(SHGs), tribal communities, craftsmen, weavers, and micro, small, and
medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) on the platform (MSMEs). It observed that the
government's measures to promote e-commerce, such as the Digital India program,
Unified Payment Interface (UPI), GeM, and others, have been key contributing
factors to the recent rise of E-commerce.
GeM's major goal
is to help government departments acquire products/services with the right
volume, right quality, right quantity, and right sources on time. Approximately
80,000 merchants have published approximately 6.18 Lac goods with rates on the
GeM platform.
The government
e-Marketplace (GeM) serves as the Public Procurement Portal for all Central
Government and State Government Ministries, Departments, Public Sector Units
(PSUs), and affiliated organisations. GeM works to improve the transparency,
efficiency, and inclusiveness of government procurement. GeM has the following
advantages: It is a centralized and unified public procurement platform for
government buyer organisations and suppliers of goods and services, and it is
accompanied by:
• Policy changes
for the current public procurement ecosystem
• Increased Inclusion and Ease of Doing
Business (EoDB) with the Government (particularly for smaller organisations
such as MSMEs)
• Process standardization supported by a
regulatory framework
• A fully
automated system enabled by technological breakthroughs
